I know I know, it’s like you can’t help yourself. The end of the year is coming up and even though you fight it, you still feel compelled to make the dreaded New Year’s Resolution. And it’s not like you can even come up with something original, at least I can’t. I feel like every year I make a vow to lose that weight or save more money or finally start flossing regularly.
Every year I start off feeling super hyped, only to fizzle out by March. I am a notorious procrastinator and if you’re anything like me then you know a new year’s resolution is our clever way of putting something off for a few more weeks. There are so many things you can put into practice now but sound so much better doing at a definitive starting point. Doesn’t the idea of starting something on January 1st really get your juices going? It’s even better than starting something on a Monday. And if January 1st IS a Monday well holy shit that’s like hitting the jackpot! The sad part is, it’s a load of crap. That’s why the gyms are always full in the new year and empty by Easter. Some people just can’t seem to make it stick.
So I decided to do away with it all and make daily resolutions. Every day I make a choice to do something to improve myself, no matter how small. Whether it’s learning a new word, reading a book, exercising, or simply learning from the people around me (there is always someone who knows something you don’t know). Because every day is a chance to start over. Not wait for the new week or the new month or the new year. If I waited on that I’d be sitting in a rocking chair wondering where the hell all my good years went. (I think I’m actually halfway there).
Don’t get me wrong, goals are important and you should definitely have them. But what are you waiting for? All waiting does is breed fear, anxiety and doubt, Believe me, I know. Of course it won’t be easy and of course there will be good days and bad days but the most important thing is to keep going every day. Even if you didn’t lose any weight this week, even if you only managed to save $20, even if you only remembered to floss once. Keep going, because when you improve at anything, you improve.
What are you doing to improve yourself?
XO
